[ARCHIVED] Large Scale Mural: Call for Artist Qualifications

Application Deadline: Wednesday, Mar 25, 2020 5 p.m.

Compensation: $30,000 (inclusive of all artist fees, design, materials, labor, installation, permits, insurance and travel).

Call Summary: The City of Issaquah invites professional artists/artist teams to submit their qualifications for consideration to design and implement a large-scale mural artwork for a bike and pedestrian tunnel located on the East Lake Sammamish Trail, near SE 62nd Street. The selected artist/artist team will work with the City of Issaquah Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department and the Arts Commission through the artwork development and installation process.

Site Description: The mural artwork will be located within the bike and pedestrian tunnel along East Lake Sammamish Trail, near SE 62nd Street. In early 2019, the City of Issaquah completed a major road project that extended SE 62nd Street between 221st Place and Lake Drive, adding two roundabouts, as well as upgrades along the East Lake Sammamish Trail and enhancements to the North Fork of Issaquah Creek. The bike and pedestrian tunnel is located within this larger project area.

The tunnel is approximately 128 feet long and 11 feet high. Ideally, mural artwork will cover a significant percentage of the tunnel’s interior wall space.

Artwork Requirements: Mural artwork should fit well within the context of the site and consider the natural environment and public artwork nearby. Artwork should cover a significant percentage of the tunnel’s interior wall space. Artist/artist team should use materials of the highest quality, designed and fabricated for durability and low maintenance and include the application of an anti-graffiti protective coating/sealant. An element of community involvement in the mural installation process is preferred.

Budget: The total budget for the project is $30,000. Budget is inclusive of all artist fees, travel, design, insurance, permits, materials, labor and installation.

Anticipated Timeline:

  • Deadline for submissions: Wednesday, March 25, 2020 by 5:00 p.m.
  • Proposed selection notification: April 15, 2020.
  • Contract initiation and design: Q2-3, 2020.
  • Painting and Installation: Q3 2020

Please note, this project has a short timeline for completion.

Artist Qualifications/Eligibility: 

  • Applicants must have past experience executing large-scale murals in a public space. 
  • Applicants must live in Washington State.

Selection Criteria:

  • Quality and strength of past public artwork, as demonstrated in application materials;
  • Proven ability to coordinate and collaborate with project managers, design teams and community stakeholders in a public art process;
  • Demonstrated success delivering public art on time and within budget.
  • Experience with community engagement via artmaking is a plus.

To Apply: The following materials should be submitted to Arts Program Administrator Amy Dukes via email. All submissions must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on March 25, 2020.

  • Letter of interest (limit two pages).
  • A professional resume/CV with qualifications. If submitting as an artist team, the team must submit a resume for each team member.
  • Two professional references with current contact information, from completed or current projects.
  • Visual support materials of previous public artwork (12 images max).
  • Annotated image list to accompany the submitted images.
