Posted on: January 4, 2019[ARCHIVED] Update: Northwest Sammamish Road
Issaquah is committed to finding opportunities to make Northwest Sammamish Road more accommodating for cyclists and pedestrians.
Many challenges, however, are ahead. Minimal space is available alongside portions of the road to add amenities, and the City’s funding sources for large capital projects are limited.
As a first step, Issaquah is looking to leverage Washington State Department of Transportation’s I-90 Peak Use Shoulder Lanes project to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists by widening the shoulder on Northwest Sammamish Road between Southeast 51st Street and Schneider Creek (often called the “pinch point”).
It's anticipated that City Council members will review funding for this project – along with other capital projects throughout the City – during the first few months of 2019 in a variety of meetings.
Meanwhile, future phases will aim at improving non-motorized access along other sections of the corridor, but those phases will take more time to complete.
