[ARCHIVED] Meet One of Issaquah History's Cast of Characters

Get to know Ben Legg — one of Issaquah history's cast of characters — at a free singalong event, 11 a.m. Oct. 29, 2016.

Issaquah History Museums Director Erica Maniez and musician Fred Hopkins team up for a presentation about Legg — the son of a troubled Issaquah family and a member of the Industrial Workers of the World, a labor union also known as Wobblies.

On the day of the Everett Massacre — a confrontation that took place on the Everett docks Nov. 5, 1916 — Wobblies arrived for a free speech protest, only to be met by the sheriff and a number of deputized citizens.

Few agree as to who fired the first shot, but by the end of the conflict, four Wobblies and two deputies were dead. In the middle of the melee was the enigmatic Legg.

Music, provided by Hopkins, will punctuate the presentation at the Issaquah Depot Museum, 78 First Ave. N.E. Audience members are invited to sing along to Wobbly favorites like "One Big Union" and "Hold the Fort."
