Lifeguard / CPR Classes

Julius Boehm Pool offers American Red Cross lifeguarding, first aid and CPR/AED training classes.

Lifeguarding

American Red Cross lifeguarding courses are offered year-round at the pool. Participants must be 15 years old by the last day of class.

Prerequisites

  • You must pass a 300-yard continuous swim using front crawl and/or breaststroke with breath control and rhythmic breathing.
  • Within one minute and 40 seconds, swim 20 yards, surface dive 7 to 10 feet, pick up a 10-pound object and return to the start position holding the object with both hands, while keeping the face at or near the surface to enable breathing.
  • Tread water for two minutes using only your legs.

There is no refund if a participant fails the course requirements.

Successful course completion will include American Red Cross certifications in lifeguarding, first aid and CPR/AED.

Lifeguarding Review

Lifeguarding review courses are offered periodically for currently certified lifeguards in need of re-certification.

Waterfront Skills Module

The purpose of the Waterfront Skills Module is to teach lifeguards the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to emergencies in nonsurf, open-water areas.

Prerequisites

  • You must have a current American Red Cross lifeguarding, first aid and CPR/AED certification.
  • Swim 550-yards front crawl and/or breaststroke, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Swim goggles are allowed.
  • Tread water for two minutes using only your legs.
  • Within one minute and 40 seconds, swim 20 yards, surface dive 7 to 10 feet, pick up a 10-pound object and return to the start position holding the object with both hands, while keeping the face at or near the surface to enable breathing.
  • Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 to 7 feet of water, resurface and swim 5 yards to the side of the pool.

There is no refund if a participant fails the course prerequisites.

Successful course completion will include American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding certification.

Lifeguard Instructor Training

American Red Cross lifeguard training courses are offered periodically at the pool. Participants must be 17 years old by the last day of class.

Prerequisites for Instructor Candidates

  • You must possess one of the following:
    • A current American Red Cross certificate for lifeguarding, first aid and CPR/AED
    • An equivalent certificate from another approved organization
  • Successfully complete the online session for the lifeguarding instructor course.
  • Successfully complete the precourse session.
  • Obtain the lifeguarding instructor's manual and lifeguarding manual after you have successfully completed the precourse session.

Successful course completion will include American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor certification.

CPR / First Aid

Call 425-837-3350 to arrange private certification classes for groups of six or more. CPR and first aid classes can be combined.
