Anti-Aircraft Creek Culvert Replacement
Flooding

Overview

To reduce flooding risks, the City is replacing a culvert that runs underneath Newport Way Northwest near Northwest Oakcrest Drive.

The old culvert cannot accommodate water from Anti-Aircraft Creek during major storms.

This project also improves fish passage and habitat along the creek.

Traffic Impacts
Because the culvert runs underneath Newport Way Northwest, crews will have to cut into the road to relocate utility lines and replace the culvert.

The contractor will build bypass lanes north and south of the roadway, and reroute traffic during the culvert installation. Two lanes of traffic will typically remain open on Newport, but the lanes will be tighter, and trucks may cause delays as they enter and leave the site.

While this is a summary of expected traffic impacts, it may change (and, at times, include night and weekend hours). Drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes.

Other Impacts
  • Vehicles, construction equipment, materials and/or signs will be located along the shoulders of Newport Way.
  • Pedestrian access will be provided.
  • Access to the Big Tree Ridge Trailhead for vehicles and pedestrians is very limited.
  • Expect rough pavement surfaces (such as pavement patches and steel plates over roads).

Schedule of Work
July
  • Survey work (both on and off roadway) and final utility work

August-September
  • Heavy excavation, placement of the culvert and creation of a new stream bed (drivers, cyclists and pedestrians should watch for changes to the temporary bypasses)

October
  • Final paving and striping of temporary roadway surfacing

Funding
City's Stormwater Utility Funds $814,000
FEMA grant $131,000
Total $945,000
